Rhetorical Work

Rhetorical means to use words to persuade an audience or connect with them. In this article by Kevin Roozen, the author of  “Writing is a social and rhetorical activity” explains “writing is a social and rhetorical activity” means writers are always engaged with something or making a meaning of something for their particular audience and their purpose.

they’re always connected with others, with expectation of no answer back, for example making them understand something about something, for example sometimes they collapse with shorthand descriptions such as “I am writing an email’ or “I am writing a notes” (p. 17), from which they’re connecting with others but no answer back from their audience and writers audiences are the readers, when we read something such as articles or books, we are audience of those articles and books authors. Writers are somehow connected with others and have the audience or purpose of their writing, like something meaningful to their audience. Each writer has an audience and some sort of message or text for their audience. Roozen explains that “Writers are always doing the rhetorical work of addressing the needs and interests of a particular audience” (p. 17). For example It can be a father writing comments on a birthday card for a daughter to show love, their feelings and communicating with them. He states that writing always has an audience and it can be anyone, your parents, children or your boss, the writing always belongs to someone. writing needs an audience. Roozen explains in order to accomplish writer works and purpose, they draw upon a lot of people, which are writers’ audiences and it can be anyone. Writers seem like they’re lonely and isolated but somehow they’re always drawing upon ideas and communicating with other people and collaborating their experiences and ideas. Writing isn’t just about having contact with other people, there’s varieties of writing and people who shape them for the final product or message. Roozen explains there are people or things that help writing shape their genre like their tools, artifacts and technologies and the technologies and tools they use, they are also shaped by writers. Sometimes while writing shorthand descriptions such as “i am writing notes” we think we are composing alone but we are always connected with others or with social and rhetorical acts. To understand rhetorical work, it’s essential and it helps administrators and others to make better decisions in their work or anything.
