Learning to become a good writer requires different kinds of practice, time, and effort

By: Zachary Sykes

In All Writers Have More to Learn by Shirley Rose, the author thoroughly explains the writing process. Writing must be learned and practiced; one cannot master it during the first attempt. Vigorous practicing allows us to maximize the benefits of training and accounts for significant improvement. What we practice and devote our time and effort to most is what we strive to achieve and become. With constant practice comes the necessity of focus. Focus is the ultimate key to mastery and success; when paired with vigorous practice, a writer can accomplish anything.

Writing is quite a complex process that one must master through experience and personal account, so focus and practice are essential to ultimate success. Various types of practice have proven to be the ultimate key to success when learning the many ways of writing. Author Kathleen Yancey perfectly depicts the necessity of practice to become a great writer in her article,  Learning To Write Effectively Requires Different Kinds Of  Practice, Time, And Effort.

Research has demonstrated that for influential writers and writing, practice is the key: engaging in the different kinds of practices identified above to acquire fluency, to focus on techniques and strategies, and to engage with other humans is the way for all human beings to develop into competent writers.

Different types of practice allow different skills and techniques to be learned and developed. One can significantly sharpen skills by exposing yourself to different kinds of practice and training. Devoting specific amounts of time to various areas will amount to being a very well-rounded and highly developed writer.

Although practice is crucial to success, effort and time are also required. The effort allows us to push ourselves far past our limits and continue to strive for success even if we feel it is too far out of reach. The effort also keeps us striving for our ultimate goal of success and accomplishment. Time is an important partner to effort as time is essential to reach our goals. The more time we put into something, the more we can learn about it, and the more we can find ways to grow and improve in the areas we desire to. Overall, success (whether big or small) is only possible with proper time and effort toward what we want to be successful in.

Writers must also learn and accept that strategies used in one writing version will only be effective for some areas of writing. Multiple situations bring many different circumstances that a good writer must consider to achieve success effectively. An additional problem is where multiple practice methods help the most. Practicing many different ways will prepare a writer for different situations, so they have other techniques and strategies depending on the given scenario. The writer must accept these circumstances and adapt to produce the best writing possible. If the writer trusts their skill and practice, they should have no issue creating a successful piece of writing.

The field of writing is such a vast and immersive area, so one must practice it. There must be a significant emphasis on the importance of practicing writing, as so many benefits come with it. This emphasis must come from teachers and other people that acknowledge the importance of writing and the practice of it. There are many ways to allow writing practice to be more enjoyable; one is embracing your creativity and pursuing your passions via writing. Doing something you love will hold much more value and importance than something you do not care about. If you can harness this passion and channel it into your writing, you will find it much easier to practice and devote your time to writing. With this practice, you must accept that there will be a learning curve and struggles, and you will fail. These are all significant components to success, and if you trust the process and stay on the path of good, you will succeed and continue to grow and evolve your writing. Overall, learning to write effectively requires different kinds of practice, time, and effort. However, if you devote time to striving for improvement, giving great effort, and utilizing your practice, you will become an effective and successful writer.
