Writing Is Not Natural

In “Writing Is Not Natural” the author Dylan B. Dryer talks about how writing has changed over a period of time and how there are new ways of communication. He states that there is a big difference between writing and speech. He explains that we as humans are more familiar and comfortable with expressing ourselves through speech and not so much writing, because it is something we do on a daily basis as well as us growing up with that, it is all we know and it is something that is simply just easier for us.

Speech is clearly an easier way of communication for most people because it just comes naturally and it is communicated easily from one to another. Writing on the other hand is more difficult because the author states that writing is humans trying to change their speech into symbols to replicate how we would usually talk. The author also adds in the fact that people usually change or judge their writing based on how easy it is for them to speak, as they should not because that is what technology is used for to help. Writing something is also a hard way to get your feelings across to the other person, it can be misunderstood in translation because it is not something we are used to.

The author states that writing has been around for five thousand years, which to me makes it seem that writing is still fairly new. As the author says writing is more difficult as it must recreate oral communication along with others, such as speech, emotions, face expressions or even hand signals and it is hard to show those things in writing. Those things are easy for us because it is natural as in our everyday lives we learn how to speak to others through watching and listening to others. He also provides evidence that humans have evolved their speech through the practice of speaking to one another, hence the reason this is something that comes so easy and natural to so many peopleThis Is Hard Work GIFs - Get the best GIF on GIPHY

I chose this gif because for most people it is hard to write, as we can not share perfectly our emotions or feelings. We use speech to communicate those feelings towards other people. I also wanted to add in another gif but it did not let me, it was going to state “facts” because I personally believe the author is speaking facts when he says speech comes natural to us and writing not so much.
