Revision Central

In “Revision Is Central to Developing Writing,” Doug Downs expresses how revision works because writing shares a feature of other language-based endeavors. He also mentions how revising can give the writer something new, more or different to say. Writing can not be perfect but you can improve your writings. Without change the meaning you can take out words that are necessary when you revise and edit.

Anne Lamott’s “Shitty First Drafts” and Doug Downs “Revision Is Central to Developing Writing,” are similar because they both express how it takes time to get a good piece. Both articles talk about ways to develop your writing. They both talk about how people feel about feedback. In the article written by Downs it focuses more on revision and Lamott’s focuses more on writing first drafts. Lamott talks about her own personal experience and Down is stating facts he has found or knows. Ask anyone who is successful, did you revise or double check what you were doing to get where you are or where you are headed?

When you first write an essay it might not be perfect. This is why we revise, edit and go through a revision process. Writers should be open to corrective criticism because they can  help you edit your final piece of writing. Even if they are editing it themselves and think it’s perfect they should all ways get an outside opinion. They may point out even the smallest things and it might irritate you but at least you know now.

Revision literally means to “re-see” so you need to take a break and then come back to it with a different mind set. You have to reconsider your arguments, sometimes change your audience, or redefine your purpose. No one is perfect we all make mistakes, so what if you can’t make a perfect essay right a way. Beautiful and great things take time and hard work. You just have to have an open-mind.

I know personally I have a hard time organizing my thoughts I just start writing and stop till I’m out of ideas. Then in my revisions I reorganize to make myself look more professional. Another thing is paragraphs, when we were younger we were also taught too write long detailed sentences. As we grew up we were forced to shorten those sentences without changing the meaning. Which can be very difficult because in the end you usually make it too short and change the meaning. When you revise you or others can see your mistakes and help you come up with more clear and concise words.
