Habits Can Be Broken

Understanding the process and dynamics of writing takes time, habits good or bad can always be broken.

Understanding the process and dynamics of writing takes times, habits good or bad can aways be broken. As adolescents, we learn the basics and expound on the basic to create our own dynamics of writing. This was the summary of “Writers, Histories, Processes, and Identities Vary” by Kathleen Blake Yancy and “Writing is informed by Prior Experience” by Andrea Lunsford.  Reading Yancy’s piece I found myself confused, not understanding her point.  What was she trying to say? It took reading Lunsford’s essay to gain a better understanding for Yancy.

Understanding the dynamics of writing and being able to communicate effectively

In simplest form Lunsford began asking individuals about the first thing that they wrote and the answers varied from person to person, but more than likely it was their name or something that they got into trouble for and they were disciplined by writing the famous, “I will not…” 50 times, however in each situation it played a negative role on writing for most individuals, whereas Yancy discussed the history of writing where it originated from and how what started as people writing pictures on a wall thousands of years ago, to men learning the basic of literature and putting their words into  context. Writing is something that is taught when we are younger, but the struggle is breaking through what we were taught as adolescents to become better writers as young adults.

Habits have been made and are uneasy or unwilling to be broken!

Both Yancy and Lunsford articulated how learning the basics of writing can hinder an individual and development as writers because they become comfortable with what they were taught and aren’t willing to move beyond the basics to think rhetorically. Most importantly learning the basics of essay writing! We aren’t taught different genres and then when taught we aren’t willing to learn them. Habits have been made and are uneasy or unwilling to be broken!

How can we fix it??

  • We need to be willing to understand that there is more to a 5 paragraph essay, writing is more than a thesis, 3 supporting paragraphs, and a conclusion.
  • The likeness of writing isn’t the question, it’s understanding the dynamics of writing and being able to communicate effectively in all genres we are asked to write in

Write for fun and write with a purpose if no one cares what you say its ok! They are your thoughts and views, and they deserve to be heard.

The obligation to these students lies heavy on professors!

Reflect Restore and Renew!

It’s your responsibility t understand bad habits are meant to be broken, but take time to be broken, after all it took 12 years for us to manage writing a 5 paragraph essay so to expect an individual to master a research, analytical, or argumentative essay in 4 years isn’t realistic especially if we aren’t provided with all of the tools to become effective writers and lastly secondary education needs a makeover if I was taught half of what I learned as an adult I would have been privy to a lot of information to include being able to write a research paper.
