Responsibilities of the Writer and the Reader

In the article “Writing Involves Making Ethical Choices,” by John Duffy, talks about how important the relationship between the writer and the reader are. When writing we need to engage with the reader and think about them as we write. Using the correct attitude towards our reader based on the context and involving human values and virtues. Writing is all about the audience (reader) because they are who we are writing to. Without them our writing would be pointless.

“Writing involves Ethical Choices because every time we write for another person, we propose a relationship with other human beings, our readers.” -John Duffy

      • What are three ethical responsibilities do we have as writers?
        • initiating a relationship between the writer and reader
        • selecting the attitude towards the reader based on the context
        • needing to address the reader as we write
      • What are three ethical responsibilities do we have a readers?
        • having an open mind to what we read
        • being willing to learn
        • engaging with the writer (whether disagreeing or agreeing)

In the article it explains the relationship between writer and reader and our responsibilities as such. When reading the article finding the responsibilities of the writer is easy but finding the responsibilities of the reader takes some thought because even though it goes hand in hand each other the responsibilities are different.

I chose the specific responsibilities that I did based on what the writers responsibilities were and what would make sense as a response to the readers. As a reader you should always go into the reading with an open mind and be willing to learn even if you completely agree with the writer or not.

Same with the writer, as a writer you need to understand that you are talking to your reader. So you need to know what kind of attitude to use, and address your readers in some way that there is a relationship there.

If neither did their part as writer and reader then it would be pointless to even read or write. We as writers write so that our readers have a place to escape mentally or a place to learn. Keeping that in mind we always must be thinking about the response of the reader so that we know we are on the right track.

As a reader we need to keep in mind the reason the writer has written what we are reading so we know how to approach it so we can get the full experience from the reading. The relationship between writer and reader is very important and should never be taken for granted.
