Crafting Connections: Exploring the Social and Persuasive Nature of Writing By Yunek Collins

Writing is more than just putting words on paper-it’s a dynamic and social process. It allows us to connect with others, share ideas and persuade through the power of language. Whether it’s a heartfelt letter, an engaging blog post, or a persuasive essay, writing has the ability to spark conversations, share opinions, and foster meaningful connections. It’s like a dance between words and people, where we use rhetoric to convey our messages effectively and influence our audience.

Writing is a super social and rhetorical activity that we engage in every day. Platforms like online forums or discussion boards bring people with similar interests together, creating a space for sharing ideas, knowledge, and experiences. By writing thoughtful responses or asking questions, we can engage in ongoing conversations and connect with people from all over the world. We use writing to connect with others whenever we share our views and opinions on Facebook or Instagram. Even something as simple as a check-in message to your grandmother is an example of using writing to stay in touch with a loved one.GIF texting - animated GIF on GIFER

It is also true that writing can be very persuasive; rhetoric is often used in writing to persuade. This semester, I was assigned a book in a class. According to an article in the book, “Writing Is a Social and Rhetorical Activity” by Kevin Roozen, emphasizes that writing is a social and rhetorical activity, with each piece having its own audience and purpose. His argument is supported by examples like a pharmacy that provides medication details to patients. There is a purpose to all writing, as it is social, derived from the experiences and ideas of others.

Take a look at this video, advertisements use persuasive language and visual techniques to convince consumers to buy a product. This commercial uses writing rhetorically by using a catchy slogan and using emotional appeals to get viewers attention.

It was said by Roozen that,”working to accomplish their purpose and address an audience’s needs, writers draw upon many other people.”Just like writers who draw upon various influences and perspectives to enhance their writing, you might also use your own experiences, emotions, and shared memories to connect with a significant other. Once I wrote to my girlfriend, letting her know I was having a rough day and needed some time alone, but reassured her that she’s not the problem. By taking her perspective and emotions into account and communicating my own needs, I was able to accomplish my purpose and meet the needs of my audience.
